Houston ISD cancela la escuela hasta el 30 de marzo, casi todos los demás distritos cierran la próxima semana

Funcionarios de Houston ISD anunciaron el jueves que las clases se cancelarán hasta el 30 de marzo, mientras que casi todos los distritos escolares más grandes del área de Houston declararon que cerrarán al menos la próxima semana, en medio de las preocupaciones sobre la propagación del nuevo coronavirus.

Los ISD de Alief y Spring Branch también dijeron que cancelarían las clases del viernes. Ambos distritos, así como HISD, están en vacaciones de primavera la próxima semana.

El anuncio de HISD sigue al cierre del Campus Académico Felix Fraga de Houston Community College, que el distrito también usa, luego de que los funcionarios identificaran “exposición potencial” a COVID-19.

“A medida que recibimos nueva información, así es como tomamos una nueva decisión sobre si cerramos un campus o si cerramos todo el distrito”, dijo Lathan al final de una reunión apresurada de la junta escolar.

Más de 20 distritos actualmente en vacaciones de primavera anunciaron preventivamente su cierre en rápida sucesión el jueves por la tarde, citando la pandemia COVID-19. Entre ellos estaban Cypress-Fairbanks, Fort Bend, Conroe, Katy, Humble y Spring ISD.

La mayoría dijo que permanecerían cerrados hasta el 20 de marzo, pero eso puede cambiar a medida que cambie la situación.

Ningún distrito ha informado de casos de coronavirus que infecten a miembros del personal o estudiantes, pero los funcionarios de salud esperan que el número de casos confirmados aumente en los próximos días a medida que el virus se propaga y aumentan las pruebas.

Los anuncios se producen después de que la jueza del condado de Harris, Lina Hildago, pidiera a las escuelas que permanecieran abiertas. Le preocupaba que los trabajadores de salud y emergencias no pudieran hacer su trabajo si optaban por quedarse en casa y cuidar a sus hijos. Agregó que la investigación mostró que cuando las escuelas cerraron durante la propagación del virus H1N1, no cambió mucho.
